Big Mushy Happy Lump by Sarah Andersen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE BOOK:
I easily read this in one sitting, with a multitude of giggling fits. I really enjoyed that this book, unlike the first book (Adulthood Is a Myth), she writes along with her anecdotes (instead of just a comic). It was incredibly heart-felt and personal, which I just… adored.
CHARACTERS/DYNAMICS:
I want to meet her boyfriend.
Also, the star of this book is either 1) that Sarah hates, the one with the top knot bun. and 2) her mum’s new kitten.
THEMES:
Like the first book, Sarah shows the struggle of anxiety (and other mental health issues). This really struck home for me, and it was powerful and encouraging how Sarah shares in such a charismatic way, the devastation of her mental health hardships. I completely understood what she was trying to depict.
How can a book make you want to laugh on every page, but also want to cry?!?
QUOTES:
“I think the most important thing I’ve learned, however is that being social is supposed to be fun. I tend to forget this when I’m curled up in a ball, alone in my room, avoiding everything. I’m trying to remember that the point of seeing friends is to enjoy their company, not worry about their every opinion or every small misstep I take.”
IMPACT:
This book is wonderful. This is not only because I can identify with so many of these discourses. It’s mainly because this book perfectly encapsulates so many prevalent things in modern youth-culture. From education, gender expectations… and yes, mental health.
Though this book isn’t some hard-set novel discussing severe anxiety, as an agoraphobic person suffering just as tremendously, this book makes me smile and know I’m not alone.
Thank you, Sarah. I look forward to reading more of your work.
