This book wasn’t great, compared to the first two instalments.
It’s message and photo/comic essay was aimed for aspiring artists— so I am not the intended audience. It didn’t ring as effective of a message to me than the first two books (which dealt with more around the issues of introversion, anxiety, and depression).
What I particularly had a gripe with was Sarah’s intro to the context of publishing art to the online sphere. I liked that she acknowledged that since it’s popularity in the 90s, people (particularly POC), there has always been harassment and “unhelpful” environments, such as racism.
However she then calls this a hazy ‘smudge’ within the internet.
I don’t think it was right to diminish such a prevalent, ongoing circumstance that people have to endure (for no fair reason).
Aside from that tiny detail, the book was made with thorough quality. A new artistic feature was Sarah’s blurring effect, typically used in conjunction to a hilarious close up of somebody’s face. This didn’t look as appealing to me, but it’s certainly noted that she’s tried something new!
The final thing that didn’t make this my favourite instalment was its love for cats, over doggies. Of course, Sarah loves both species deeply, but I would have appreciated and connected with it so much more if it was memeing about dogs instead. Just a person response!
In sum, you’ll enjoy this if:
– you’re an aspiring artist
– you’re a fan of cats
This book wasn’t therapeutic unlike the first two— so I’ll stick to rereading those when I feel like a quick distracting from doom and gloom.
